Ministry with the Homeless

The Cathedral supports a crucial need in the city of Erie. Our Neighbor’s Place is an offsite emergency shelter that houses up to 70 men and women per night during the cold winter months.   This winter, owing to covid, the shelter will have far fewer volunteers.

Cathedral volunteers cook, serve meals and staff shifts throughout the night on a rotating basis with several other Erie-area churches.

We collect the following items for the shelter to provide its clients:

  • New or gently used jeans (men’s)
  • New or gently used winter boots (men’s)
  • New or gently used winter coats (men’s)
  • New winter gloves (men’s)
  • New boxer shorts (men’s)
  • New undershirts
  • Travel size deodorant and body lotion
  • Chapstick

Please contact the Cathedral office if you wish to donate items.

In collaboration with First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Deacon Dorothy Konyha organizes the Cathedral’s part in the ministry to the homeless at the Emergency Shelter. Volunteers from the Cathedral work alongside seasoned volunteers from Covenant. This ministry gives people direct contact with the poorest and most vulnerable among us and an opportunity to minister in partnership with our fellow Christian sisters and brothers.
